Basics and Benefits

The Basics of Homeopathy

Whether for first aid, emergencies, physical injuries, acute illness, vaccination support, long-term conditions, or emotional and psychological matters, homeopathy is a universal and effective alternative medicine. Non-toxic, non-addictive, it has no conventional side-effects, and has no danger of overdose, even for babies.

Homeopathy has 200 years of clinical evidence behind it, and continues to be the treatment of choice for millions across Europe and the world.

Conventional medicine is based on the idea that the body is merely a (very well-organised) set of molecules, a bio-chemical machine. This model works up to a point, because clearly, when the molecules go wrong we can measure this and send in chemicals (pharmaceutical drugs) to treat the symptoms, and often reduce them.

Homeopathic medicine is based on the idea that the body is more than this machine, that it also has, running through it, a kind of energy field (imagine the electro-magnetic field around an electrical appliance, or the radio waves around the earth), which we call ‘the vital force', or ‘the life force'. Nobody can yet say for sure what this energy field looks like, but evidence from centuries of successful homeopathy suggests that it does exist.

What is believed is that, when the person is healthy, the energy field is in balance. But when something goes wrong, the field goes out of balance. It goes into ‘dis-ease'. From the point that the body is in dis-ease, it starts to try to right itself and get better, and in doing this, it throws out symptoms. So homeopaths see symptoms, not as the illness itself, but as a messenger service for the body, telling us what is the total picture of the dis-ease. It is this total picture that we look for when we treat patients.

So, homeopaths believe that the symptoms are not the illness itself, but the body's response in trying to deal with the illness. They are the warning signs that something deeper is not right. So what we do is look at your total range of symptoms, and try to match the picture of those symptoms to a specific remedy. The principle is that the remedy matches the resonance, or the ‘radio frequency' as it were, of the deeper dis-ease. And the effect is that the remedy then acts on and rebalances that deeper dis-ease, so that the symptoms disappear.

We know what effect this remedy can have because, under test conditions, it has been found to cause those symptoms, superficially, in healthy guinea-pig testers. This matching principle is called ‘like cures like'. So, for example, we may give homeopathic coffee to some patients who can't sleep! And we may give homeopathic onion to some people with the symptoms of hay fever (itchy nose and burning irritation and watering in the eyes).

Homeopathic remedies are prepared from natural substances, such as the plant Marigold (Calendula), the mineral Silica (Silicea), and the ink of the cuttlefish (Sepia). But to understand how homeopathy works does take a leap of imagination, because at first sight, it appears to defy logic. The actual remedies are systematically diluted and potentised (vigorously shaken), and there is often no single molecule of the original substance left. We think, but we don't yet know for sure, that some kind of sub-molecular structuring takes place through the medium of water, and that this can affect the body's own sub-molecular energy patterns.

With homeopathy we can treat a wide range of conditions. It is good for pregnant mothers, babies, children, teenagers, women's ailments, men's ailments, sports injuries, problems of ageing, and almost all emotional and psychological issues. The medicine is safe, gentle, non-toxic, and non-addictive. There are no conventional side-effects and there is no danger of overdose, even for babies. The remedies work well alongside nutritional supplements, herbal medicines, conventional medicines, operative surgery, dentistry, osteopathic treatment, and psychotherapy.

The Benefits of Homeopathy

What can homeopathy do? First of all: what is health? Health is the free flow of energy within every human being, from which come creativity, joy, balance, natural humour, and lightness. Many people realise that, to achieve this, they need to find a new lifestyle, or a new living environment. And some turn also to alternative medicines. One of the most useful of these is homeopathy.

Homeopathy can do amazing things. Normal scientists say it can't work. Open-minded scientists want to know how it works. Patients and homeopaths know it does work. In the 2004 programme on homeopathy on BBC 2, they suggested that millions used it, including the Royal Family, Bill Clinton, and David Beckham.

It's a big claim, but homeopathy can change your life. It can tackle everything from depression to tendonitis, and from anger to ear infection. Whether you have had the problem for one week or one lifetime, homeopathy can address it.

As for the benefits of coming to me in particular, I am in the business of making a difference to you as an individual, and I will approach your case by combining nutrition and essences as well as homeopathy. In coming to see me, I hope you will feel comfortable enough to tell your whole story, and, in the process, that you will refresh mind and body, revive your spirit, and, at a deep level, start a process of positive change.
